Is the Internet Tablet operating system (inc. the kernel, the GUI and bundled apps) entirely open-source?

For example, I read about people wishing that they could lock the gadgets on the home screen - is this really something that the community cannot fix, only Nokia?

I'm actually a pre-newbie, as I don't have a NIT yet, but I'm thinking about it...

Entirely open source, no.

There has been much discussion of this topic already.

- if you're interested in the SDK (maemo), start here, then click the various menu links on the right of the screen... this provides a good overview...

hth!

Just out of interest, is there any portable device which uses 100% open source OS and software?

Portable stuff in general seems to be much more proprietary than desktop machines.

I believe some of the firmware for openmoko is proprietary.

HP100LX + some open BIOS + Minix might have a chance, but I doubt anyone's done that.

Last I checked the gps, wifi, bt, and baseband use binary blob firmwares. Basically what the wiki discusses is that there are NO 100% free wifi cards and gsm baseband cards because of the FCC regs. Gps exports a standard serial protocol so they don't see the harm in not having open firmware there either.

While I would love to see nokia open more of their stack, they have a commercial product in the market where others do not.

Good call. They're absolutely refusing to have any binary blobs on the device by default, aren't they?
