I'm guessing I didn't get a response earlier because of the hardy length of my previous post, so I'll simplify my question:

Where do I store maps downloaded with Winmapper on my SD card for use with Maemo Mapper? And what action do I make within Maemo Mapper for those maps to be seen?

AND

After downloading maps directly from Maemo Mapper, do they automatically show up on the screen or is there an action I have to perform for them to appear?

Thank you for your time.
Evan

I don't think Winmapper works for Maemo Mapper v2.x - or has it been updated recently? The old Winmapper software put the maps into a directory structure, which is the format that Maemo Mapper v1.x expected. Maemo Mapper v2.x uses a database instead of a directory hierarchy.

No, they should be immediately visible, or, at worst, you might need to zoom in/out or move the map around on the screen to force a screen refresh.

Try turning "Auto-Download" on, available from the "Maps" menu. You need to be connected to the internet for that to work, but it will get you started with some maps, and from there, you can figure out which parts of the world for which you want to download more maps.

Thank you for your detailed response gnuite. I tried the Auto-Download suggestion and it worked like a charm. I just wish the built-in caching would work for me...perhaps I'll try a reinstall, and maybe even a reflash. Thank you again--I appreciate the help.
