I'm a total newbie and I just bought my N810 specifically to use when travelling. I can't seem to get it set up correctly.

I'm choosing a connection that is unlocked, but when I try to get on the Internet, it says "connected to Belkin.." but then I get the message that "Server not found".

When trying to pick up my email, I get a message to enter WEP, but I don't know what WEP is??? I did try to set up my email account with the same properties I have on my laptop.

If anyone can give me a quick fix for these problems, I'd sure appreciate it. I've read lots of the posts, and I haven't come upon anything that is helping... and I leave on my trip tomorrow!

Thanks... aJILLity

It sounds like you may be trying to connect to wi-fi networks in your neighbourhood. That often won't work well, and is as often not legal either. WEP means that it's encrypted, and that's a definite way to tell that it's a private network.

If a network is named 'Belkin' it's also 99.99% certain that it's a home network, because that's the default network name when you buy your home wi-fi router at the el-cheapo home data equipment dealer (and it also indicates that the user isn't experienced in setting up networks and the reason it's "open" is not because you're welcome to use it, but that the owner doesn't have the knowledge to do it right. Stay off those ones too.)

You should instead try to find public hot spots (but avoid anyone called 'Free Public WiFi', they're not legitimate working hotspots, I'll not go into that here). Check out your nearest coffee shop. Or school or work or airport or hotel.

On some of those they're "open" in the sense that there's no WEP or WPA key, but you still may not be able to read your email. For those, start the browser and input _any_ URL. You may then be re-directed into a 'login' page, where (at least at T-Mobile hotspots and the like) you're supposed to enter your credit card info and pay out of your nose in order to use the network (if you do go through that then things should suddenly start working.)

Finally, if you have a bluetooth-enabled phone, possibly with a data plan, you should be able to go on the network through the phone. The wizard should have asked you about that the first time you powered on the N8x0, if your phone was on and its BT enabled and visible.

Thanks for the reply.

I should have been more specific. The Belkin connection is my home router, and it it open, but that's when the "server not found" message appears.

I also have my own connection coming up that is locked (I'm on Verizon Fios), and that is the one that is asking for WEP. Again, I don't know what WEP means, and I don't have a password that I remember from when the FIOS was installed.

A couple of things -
a network may show open (as is mine) but be MAC filtered.
check your belkin to make sure that it's WIDE OPEN to start, then after you do get a connection tighten it up.

Start with this Wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Access

To make sure your n810 is happy, try finding a free, open WiFi hotspot. They exist in lots of places - MacDonalds, coffee shops, etc. Those hotspots won't ask for WEP or other keys.

Also, from your home computer, go here and update - do this as soon as possible.
