You'll need to put one of the N800s into "Ad-Hoc" mode by typing in xterm:
Then you can just use the connection manager from the other N800's to connect to <network id> and there you go

iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc essid <network id> channel <channel number (1-15)>

and any way can make this device supporting frequency under 1GHz(say 700M)? turn on some features on the kernel? or some talent ways to hack the wlan module or even replace it? or any other tricks?

Hi,
I tried the alike code previously and today on my OS2007HE
and entering essid as "aaa" and channel 1
I get the following error message:
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A)
SET failed on device wlan0; No such device.
(sudo gainrooted maemo first)
I was advised in another thread to put
iwconfig wlan0 up
to have it run.

Ad-hoc wi-fi mode cannot use power saving so your tablets won't last long. Bluetooth is designed for such type of connections (random device to device temporary connection or creating piconet on the fly without central point decided in advance).
If you don't want to write code specific to bluetooth use bluetooth PAN and setup PAN network. Then it is same TCP/IP networking just like with wi-fi or anything else. With PAN networking you may lose some power savings and some features of bluetooth, though.

I use ad-hoc at home so that devices can connect directly. You don't need any magic, just manually define a wireless access point and if need be use fixed IP address; however, I do have a DHCP server on my linux box which has an Intel ipw2915abg card in it.

Odd... It worked fine for me... the command executed and I was able to see the network from my Mac
