Hi,
Well, I just received my n810 and because all my desktop systems are macs, I can't download nokia's firmware update.

Normally, I wouldn't care, but I understand the new OS has a simple email client. As for right now, email is impossible. It's not working with any of the verizon email settings I input.

I sure would appreciate any help you can offer.

Don't worry! :-)

There are actually two alternatives:

-You can download and install the firmware using an unofficial application for macintoshes which does pretty much the same job as the Windows app (see below)

OR

-You can download the firmware update by using someone else's Windows PC just this once, because all future firmware updates after this one will be entirely "over the air" directly onto the tablet, and won't require a computer at all.

Very helpful (and successful) advice. It's all good now, with the exception of those damned verizon outgoing settings on the email client.

Did you choose Verizon from the tablet's list of providers for the United States?

If that's the case, it sounds like Verizon is giving out the wrong settings to people, Nokia included, so you'd probably have to contact Verizon directly to find out what the settings should really be.

It's just the outgoing that fails, the incoming mail works fine?

Actually, I was surprised to see that Verizon was NOT on the tablet's list of providers.

Incoming seems to be fine. Outgoing is the problem. Verizon says the server should be outgoing.verizon.net

...and you definitely picked United States before picking a provider? That's odd, very odd, they're quite a major company.


Try to see if those exact outgoing settings work on a Macintosh e-mail client. If it works on your computer then something is going wrong on the tablet, but if it doesn't work on the computer either, then the setting is probably wrong.

If the fault is on the tablet, try clicking on the "advanced" button before you finish inputting the e-mail settings manually, there may be some additional settings you have to do.

Another thing to try is to enter your full e-mail address when it asks for a username.

Just checking the basics: in the "Outgoing" tab, you have set "Use secure authentication" to "Login" and entered your Verizon username and password, correct?

Ugh, reminds me of my days in web hosting tech support We were always to blame when ISPs blocked outgoing SMTP.

You might want to check for different types of authentication... some of them require you to log in to the POP server first. I think Verizon might require SMTP authentication with your verizon user/pass (at least according to a possibly outdated document I found by searching).
