I was using my N800 last night and it suddenly restarted, and now it hangs at the NOKIA screen. I don't get the blue progress bar, the NOKIA screen comes up, then after a moment the screen dims and it just stays like that and the power button won't turn it off. All I can do is remove the battery. Also, it turns itself on when I plug it into the AC adapter without pressing the power button and I tried turning it on with the Home button pressed but I don't get the little USB icon on the screen.

Plugging the N800 into the DC or AC adapter will always turn it on, if it's not already on, and will sit it at a CHARGING screen (or a screen indicating that the battery is already charged fully). It's one of the things I don't like on the N800--when I plug it in, when it's off.. I'd prefer it REMAINS off while charging so that it will charge more efficiently and not cast off an eerie black light with an icon glow while charging.

Anyway, that one element aside, it sounds like you might need to reflash your unit. I hope you've been keeping back-ups. Holding down the HOME key while turning it on will only show the USB icon if you also already have it plugged into the USB cable to a PC with the flashing software already set and ready to flash your Nokia.

The bme which lives in the initfs contains the charging logic, so it needs to boot partially so that this can run. This is similar to other Linux PDA-style hardware, they must generally start their kernels which control the charging behaviour (it's usually controlled from the kernel, the Nokia devices are awkward in that they keep the interface to the charging hardware hidden, so can't do it from the kernel). I presume the same holds true of WindowsCE devices as well.

The only way around this would be to have dedicated charging hardware, but I guess that adds cost to the device so it avoided at the expense of having the processor running intermittently during charging.

I think there would be good thing to stay your device in charge for 2 or 3 hours. Any way the battery become charged. After insert usb cable into device, start up update Nokia wizard, press power and swing buttons (usb's icon must appear) and begin update (reflash) process.
Good Luck! )))

Easier is to charge the battery, then pull the battery out (to ensure it is completely off), then start the flashing software and connect usb cable, *then* put the AC adaptor back in, it will partially boot and be recognised by the flasher - no need to press any buttons.
