Linux hmw900 2.6.28.10-power53 #1 PREEMPT
and espeak wouldn't work anymore.

My solution, that made the GUI programs work, too:

First, check, if you can make espeak play nicely with pulseaudio:

apt-get install pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils
espeak --stdout "test" | paplay
If you get sound, you could replace /usr/bin espeak:

mv /usr/bin/espeak /usr/bin/espeak.bin
echo -e "#\!/bin/sh\n/usr/bin/espeak.bin --stdout $@ | paplay" > /usr/bin/espeak
chmod +x /usr/bin/espeak
Admittedly a crude solution, but for me it works.
