At least the headphone button (there's a button on the headphone that you get with the tablet) should be readable while the screen is being locked (the button event is sent via D-Bus). And as there's a message showing up when you press the buttons, *some* part of the software has to receive the other button events, too.
When in locked mode, having the fullscreen button to work as play/pause with a short press and as "skip to next song" with a long press + having the + and - keys act as volume buttons would be nice.
Just needs someone to come up with a way to receive key events while in locked mode and then make the mediaplayer receive these events.

I use powerlaunch for a pocket music mode where I press a set of hardware keys and it turns off and locks the screen only. The keys can then be used to control music/volume while the device is in my pocket. This also works great for playing music while driving without requiring looking at the device.

Edit: According to http://powerlaunch.garage.maemo.org/ this should already be possible:
