I don't think it will effect battery life to the point where it's noticeable (or at all).
Though, the only way to know is to try!

The PDF viewer has state saving - it can "sleep". Look for the "zzzs..." on the task switcher once it's minimized.

I had the Nokia PDF reader running open with a book a few days now on my N810 and didn't notice any impact on battery life.
I am asking for two reasons:
1 the voice recorder to be able to quickly record a note for an audio notepad of sorts. If I have to wait for it to load, I may forget the content I need to record for later.
2 the PDF reader left open solves the problem of finding where I left off in a PDF ebook.
Thoughts on this?
