Remuco is a duplex remote control system for Linux media players and mobile phones equipped with Bluetooth or WiFi.
With Remuco, you can remotely control your favorite media player. You can switch to the next, previous, or any other media within the current playlist, browse your media library and activate other playlists, rate your media, adjust volume, and more. On the mobile phone it displays information about the current media, including cover art.

Remuco can be used with Amarok, Audacious, Banshee, Exaile, MPD, MPlayer, Rhythmbox, Songbird, Totem, TVtime, VLC and XMMS2.

Remuco has both the server side and the client side installation. the server is installed on the PC (and is available in the repositories of every major Linux distribution), and the client is installed on the mobile device. Currently the client side is written in java and can only be installed on j2me supported phones

Features of Remuco

Remuco allows you to control:

* Playback

*Seek forward or backward in current playing item

*Set the playlist to repeat or shuffle

*Control volume

*Rate,

*Tag Media being played on your PC from your mobile phone

It also Displays:

*Current playing songs including album art

*Volume level

*Progress level of current playing song and its current rating

Media browser features includes:

*Browse Currently active playlist and apply actions to them

*Browse the play queue and apply actions to them

*Browse the players media library and apply actions to them

*search for items in the player’s media library and apply actions to items in the search result

*browse the local filesystem and apply actions to files

Update= The client code has now been ported to python but still need a GUI part to make it run on maemo

The project is GPL v3 so am I dont think licensing would be an issue.

I used it on my E71 and it was the killer app

Not sure if it would be easy to port to say python or C (am not a programmer ) but it would be nice to have such an app on the N900 and maemo in general In case anyone is interested here is the link to the project page

http://code.google.com/p/remuco/

and here is a post i wrote about it a while back

Ok ever since I posted this project There seems to be little interest in it. Well I dont give up that easy. This app really as the potential to become one of the killer app of the N900. Not only can it be used to control the Music on your PC you can also use to

Edit playlist,
Create Playlist
Rate You music
Change Volume

while still able to pulse, player, forward music from your PC from your mobile
It supports arguably every music player on under the sun Amarok, Audacious, Banshee, Exaile, MPD, MPlayer, Rhythmbox, Songbird, Totem, TVtime, VLC and XMMS2, even Boxee ( yeah you heard right you can use it to control boxee) did I also say you can see the album art displayed on your mobile?

The way it works is simple. There is a phython server component installed on your PC. and a java j2me client installed on the Mobile phone. The phone connects to the PC via bluetooth or wireless .. This thing works on just about every dumb mobile device which supports j2me (which is just about every other dumb phone)

The Good news is there seem to be a fork of the client code am not a programmer but it seems the code has been ported to python. You have a look at code here

http://github.com/octplane/remuco/tr...client/python/

What needs to be ported is the client side of the app to maybe python so that it can work on the N900. I love the app so much that I have decided to go into python to see if I can help.. (I have no previous coding experience)

How can you help out.. well I have filed a feature request on the project issue tracker page. and you can always go there and add a comment so the devs know that there are people out there who would love to have this app on their N900

Here is a Youtube presentation of the project

Thank you for posting that. Just wanted to add, that you are not the only one who is looking forward to see that on his device .

Btw. the issue http://code.google.com/p/remuco/issues/detail?id=81 could use some more clicks on the star right before the text " Issue 81: Port Remuco to the N900 (maemo)". We could also say it needs more votes .

Yeah I actually filed that feature request. I am glad to see that it as been accepted. the client code for remuco which is written in java has now been ported to python. What is now needed is the GUI part. If you have experience with Qt or GTK and you want to help port this awesome killer app to maemo please head over here http://code.google.com/p/remuco/issues/detail?id=81
you can also take a look at the remuco client written in python here

http://github.com/octplane/remuco/bl...thon/client.py

and here http://github.com/octplane/remuco/bl...uco_twisted.py

The android guys have been making some progress with their port to android

I really wish I could help but am completely new to programming. I am currently in my very early stage of python learning but it would take a long time before my knowledge of programming could be any useful to help with porting remuco to the maemo platform.
