Apart from solar, the Solio can also be charged from a wall socket, car cigarette lighter socket or USB so it's still pretty useful even here.

You certainly can put the device offline if you want. The "always online" is really just a marketing thing to say that, by default, it will do online things in the background such as checking for messages and updating contacts status without you having to manually check.

I think charging the N900 over night is a given - the question is whether or not I'll have to charge it at lunchtime to get through the rest of the day.

Also, the reason I'm getting an N900 is so that I don't have to take my laptop with me all the time
