Hi

I don't know anything about programming, and I was wondering how hard it is to port some linux command-line based programs to maemo?

As I understood it, maemo 5 is "debian based", what does it mean exactly? Can we say that for example the difference between ubuntu and maemo is only the graphic interface, but they are the same underneath, or are there more divergences between them?

So, I saw ssh in extras, what about lftp, latex, emacs etc? I saw mplayer, unzip/untar are not in extras yet. Why is it difficult to port them? (lftp?)

I'm not criticizing at all, I'm just curious
thanks

I'm not sure but i think there is more differences between Ubuntu and Maemo. Like "optification" and ARM processor. I can barely remember there was a wiki page about packaging.

PS: I'm curious about it too, and want to learn packaging for Maemo. I want to package xmpp, the XM player for Linux.

Assuming the packages are available for ARMEL you can just install them from the Debian repository.
Unrar-free http://packages.debian.org/stable/unrar-free
You can install it using dpkg -i in terminal, you have to make sure you have all the correct dependencies installed

mplayer is in Extras-devel, it is not an easy port due to its video output.

Most console based should be much easier.

Also, it's quite easy to get a debian chroot running on the device and run command line apps in that environment. I've found this suitable for quite a few obscure command line utils.

It would be nice to see screen included on the device proper though, I suppose I will have to grab the deb for it. http://packages.debian.org/stable/screen
