Hi All,

I've had my N900 a week now and am loving it. I've been lucky enough not to have any problems plague me.

Anyway, over the last day or so I had a couple of ideas of things I'd like to see added to the N900. But for the life of me I don't understand this bug/enhancement thing that everyone refers to. So I thought I'd post them here to see what you think.

My first is a very simple idea and I'd even have a go at doing it myself, but I am only just trying to learn Python on my N900 (using PyGTKEditor) and wouldn't have the first clue how to integrate it into the Maemo OS. It is quite simple, an option in the desktop customisation menu (or whatever it's called), that allows you to create a .desktop file for the 4 current images. What with the problems that people a currently having trying to get the .desktop file to work correctly, I thought it'd be nice to be able to download your images and add the each desktop manually, then create the .desktop file automatically so it can be easily loaded up again later.

My 2nd idea, came from my first idea I suppose. After creating a Top Gear, loopable wallpaper, I realised that it didn't look all that good when it was covered with my desktop shortcuts, bookmarks, etc. So it'd be nice if you could hide all desktop icons/widgets, similar to how you can on the N97. It'd be even nicer if it were possible to do it be say sliding up or down the screen (since left or right is out of the question). Perhaps, also having a setting that lets to decide whether to simple hide the icons or disable them too (so that when hidden they aren't chewing up battery life). Maybe even have a slide up to just hide, and slide down to hide and disable.

Sorry, I started thinking out loud towards the end there.

Let me know what you think of my ideas and if you like them. If so, any direction as to how this bloomin' bug thing works would be smashing!

Thanks,
Dex

You mean, a nice way to show off the loopable image? I agree that might be useful on occasion, but I don't know if it needs to be as easily accessible as swiping up/down. Maybe there could be a "preview" button in the dialogue where you set the wallpapers that would show them full screen and allow swiping.

Yeh sometimes you can have a nice background ruined by icons/widgets.

The n97 has this exact feature but you swipe left or right.

If it actually disabled the widgets, it'd be great to save battery power.

I don't really see how anyone could have a problem with the desktop file, since you just copy a working one from the N900, modify the file paths and the name and you're done. Put it back onto the device with a different file name together with the pics and choose it.

Having said that, people are having problems, so I guess it holds true that users can screw up anything. Myself, I haven't ever had any problems and I've screwed around with the desktop files a lot, trying to create a perfect wallpaper for myself.

I have no problem when using my pc. Like you say just copy & modify a working file. But, when downloading from n900wallpapers, you can download the desktop file. Which doesn't have the full paths in it, then when you edit it, for some reason it doesn't work!

But I was also thinking it'd come in handy if you download a few different single wallpapers or use some photos taken on the n900. Then you could set all 4 desktops to what you want and save the layout.
