Looks like the binaries etc are still in /usr. That could account for the missing MB. Not sure that they are that large but should be an easy check

You can move them to /opt/maemo/usr/bin and create symlinks in their place (mplayer and mencoder should be enough).

OK, thanks a lot for your input. Any Idea where the leftovers might be? Anybody else expierenced this (uninstalled mplayer but did not regain space)?

How did you come up with that space is lost? Reboot the N900, then check the numbers. There's a bug which takes some space after each program installation until next reboot.

Thanks for your suggestion, mikkov. I am aware of this, so the first thing I did after installing the new version was a sudo gainroot followed by a reboot 
The space was still gone, though. I think I will fiddle a little bit and see what I can do.

since today there is a new version of mplayer. I am having two questions regarding this, maybe you can help me out:
1. How can I see if it is optified? I know that this is not the case with earlier versions.
dpkg mplayer -L gives the following output:
2. How do I get rid of the files installed by older versions? I lost 19MB of rootfs space when installing older versions. Of course I was aware of thet before installing, but mplayer is just too good
