Good, just remember, when you reboot, you have to do the "echo .." thing again.

Also, do a cold reboot (power off the device with the power butten) and do the echo thing right away to be sure the system is stable.

Well, I know what you mean. I just think for most people (maybe not in this particular case) re-flashing will be a bad outcome. As I understand it you have to re-install all your apps, re-tweak all your config and whatnot. For an actual in-use device this is a pain.

In this case, re-flash really isn't a problem, I can see that.

I don't disagree that much. But the damage is not widespread. It is not like we will delete millions of e-mails for tousands of people, or blow up a nuclear reactor or something even worse. The damage is confined to our little toy, and the risk of damaging it beoynd repair seems almost non-existent.

Software can be re-installed. It takes a couple of ours at most. This is worst case scenario. Bricking beyond repair seems more of a purely theoretical result. I think this is different for other phones, because they are not meant to be fiddled with in the way we are doing.

But this is my opinion, I may be wrong.

Interesting point about other phones not *meant* for fiddling.. I suppose the N900 *is* kind of a fiddler's phone

I was in no way saying galactic devastation would result from rendering an N900 non-bootable, just that the inconvenience should be avoided where possible..

Maybe I'm just in the careful habit though, from too much time on servers

yes, the temporary patch will kill your battery. it is almost the same if you use your device actively or not because the echo 0 stuff disables deep sleep of the device so not much left for power saving.
