It's true it would be great to have the choice of the brand/camera in the widget settings.

Meanwhile, you can replace to replace the file /etc/lirc/ML-L3+ with one of these files and adjust the shutter.py file :

http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/canon/

I got it working for my EOS450.
* install shutter
* Get canon configuration file from: http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/canon/RC-1_RC-5 and save it to /etc/licr/
* Add following line "frequency 32000" to the RC-1_RC-5 -file just before line "begin codes"
* add canon configuration to lircd.conf: echo "include \"/etc/lirc/RC-1_RC-5\"" > /etc/lircd.conf
* reload lirc: sudo /etc/init.d/lirc reload
* modify /usr/lib/hildon-desktop/shutter.py, change value of "remote" to "CANON-RC1/RC5", and value of "code" to "S"

Not very clean solution, but at least it works I used nano in xterm to edit files.

As soon as I get my n900, I'll try this with my EOS 350d, thanks!

And I agree that a timed interval feature would be a great addition

Ooh - I got all excited for one minute, hopped over to sourceforge, only to find that they have nothing for my Pentax K20D

Is there a way to find out the remote code, maybe record it with my n900?

Even if its not possible, hats off to the developer, as this is a great example of the 'swiss army knife n900'
