First this forum is great. I have been reading for two dayys and have learned alot. Need hellp with one thing though. Trying to find the best way to convert dvds to my n800. I have read about the mplayer but seems pretty complicated. I am not very tech savy so if someone could post a link or info on the best way to convert a dvd to the compatible codec that would work the best i would be verryy thankful. FYI i am writing this from my n800 at a coffee shop.....so figured that part out.
cheers

Well I have installed mplayer, most recent version, and have begun playing with Nero to rip dvd's and find the best format that will work. I have to say.....the few I have found to work ...work like crap. I am kind of getting bummed out here because I was hoping to use this n800 to replace my ipod w/video, obviously there are other benefits but video is something I really wanted.....Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
HR

Video on the n800 will probably be very good, once mplayer is optimized for the new processor. The mplayer developers don't have n800s yet, so it'll be slow going until they do.

When ripping a dvd with nero can you give me the best format specs to try?
Sorry ...I know I could eventually find it, but after spending 12 hours....and wife getting annoyed...lol...It would really help.
Thanks in advance

Well, tried DVDcatalyst and watched the Office on the n880. I noticed alot of choppy video. After spending a whole weekend trying to get a video to work I am taking the n800 back. It is an amazing device for web browsing.....but I need video playback more that browsing. I was hoping this could replace my ipod and then be an added bonus with the other features. If anyone has a suggestion as to how to get clean video playback I am all ears.....
Thanks for the reponses I did get...reallly apprecite it.

@hrada, try the following before ditching the N800:

Media Converter to convert your videos into 770/N800 format.

mplayer to watch your converted videos - it's usually much better than the built-in player (400x240 videos are not a problem on the 770) however it needs some optimising for the N800 (check this thread for more details).

i found that canola works better (on the 770) than mplayer. mplayer doe s have choppy video and audio but canola just sails right through. used dvdcatalyst 2.3 on two dvds, both played well with canola, neither worked as well with mplayer.
i see here

that canola might not work on the n800, but note indicates perhaps a file is missing and only needs to be installed.

Here is a post I made on the MythTV mailing list. In short, the 770-encode.pl script works great!
