that is not 720p resolution. 720p is 1280x720. where the 720 is the P. if the resolution is less than that the N900 will play with default Media Player. Otherwise no go. Even 1024xwhatever might not play.

Somehow I doubt that. Why do I get load driver failed message? How come video driver is limiting max resolution?

And what do you think about this claim:

IVA 2+ accelerator: as described on TI web site, a second generation power-optimized version of the imaging video and audio accelerator used in TI's DaVinci technology. Enables multi-standard (MPEG-4, H.264, WMV) encode and decode at DVD up to HD resolutions. IVA 2+ provides H.264-based video at greater than CIF resolutions.

Hello Everyone !
There is a good guide I have found from a Italian website
http://mowmotheme.it/?p=11376
use Google translator to translate it to English , You can convert pretty much from 1080p videos to n900's 800x480 and it should be perfect quality to watch on your n900

Cheers.

MPlayer uses Xvideo which accelerates colourspace transform and scaling.

The builtin media player uses codecs which run on the DSP, but I don't think they use the IVA2, it's a closed component of omap3 I think.

800x480, h264 baseline. That's the best it will do.
