You just have to connect your N900 to the PC in Mass storage mode and then take backup of your Videos, Pictures etc.

Videos will be in .videos & Pictures will be in DICM folder once you connect to the PC. If you are connecting to a GNU/Linux Distribution, the . files are taken as hidden files and will not be shown. You will have to press "Cltr+H" in nautilus file browser.

To back up your contacts just go to contacts and click on "All contacts" on the top and the "Export"

Hope this helps.

Not all N900 proponents are fanboys and this site is not a consumer forum. I think we'd all welcome reasoned and considered criticism to add to the discussion. That is the only way the community can work to improve the N900.

If posters lack the courage of their convictions, they should not post here in the first place. That applies to those on both sides of the divide.
@NokTokDaddy, I completely agree with you.

@lew247:

N900 is an awesome device. It is one of the best i have ever used. Frankly, I have till now not bought any other device other that Nokia Mobile Phones (PS: I have used other mobile phones and really not impressed). I have had Nokia 3310, 6600, 3230, N70, N96 and now N900. And IMHO, N900 by far is the best I have used till now!

Maemo (Operating system running on N900) is mostly based on open source code and we are one community (Maemo Community). Everyone must really understand the importance of a Community... I really do not want to elaborate on this.

Anyways we all would love to hear why you really do not want the N900. Or rather, May we all know what are the features that you would like to have on N900.

Cheers!

Hi! Sorry didn't mean to start some kinda war!

I managed to get out of my contract early (Only 6 months in) due to an error on carephone warehouses part.

The N900 was great, for the first 2 weeks I was showing all my mates how amazing it was, multitasking and all! And they were impressed, but over the last few months it seems most phones can now multitask!

I find my N900 boring now. I havn;t got the time to try and get emulators working, and to pay £3 in the app store for some shitty game with a rope that gets tedious and boring. I see all my mates on android and with the iphone that have so many cool games and apps, and they all seem highly polished and easy to use! Perhaps that makes me quite narrow, but imo there the better phones to have.

So, hate me, hate me! I got myself an iphone 4 on three! £99 for the phone, £30 per month, 500 mins unl texts and internet. And.... I love it! The screen is miles better than the N900, the camera is much better! No stupid blue haze all round every picture. I can now tell if I have a missed call lol! Emails are seemless! Multitasking (I know some of you guys don't think it's real multitasking!) is so quick! I have 20odd apps running in the multitasking section and the phone doesn't slow down a nudge. At first my N900 was pretty good at this but imo not in the same league.

Games! I have so many addictive and fun games!

Bluetooth, ok a bad point! Iphone doesn't seem to have proper bluetooth which sucks but meh.

At first when I had my N900 i seriously felt I had the best phone out there, but now it's practically been abandoned by nokia, it's just not the phone for me.

As the other guy has said, there are so many reasons why the N900 isn't up there with the rest of the smartphone this isn't the place to jot em all down, but I can't find many faults on the iphone at all which makes me Easy living lol!

One last thing! Why ain't there a simple master factory reset on my N900, I have to now try and follow the instructions you guys have kindly given me, but it just seems like hassle!

The N900 in a nutshell! Hassle!

So i'll sell my N900 for say £150 and then thats paid for my iphone.

On a side note, this community is going to keep the N900 alive. You guys are really helpful and really quite patient when it comes to dealing with the consumers that fell for the initial N900 marketing, and didn't realise quite what an unsupported device they have just signed up to for 24 months, and that they would need to put quite alot of effort in to get in anywhere.

I'm sure you guys will get meego working on the N900, lets hope by the time it's out the hardware won't be too old for it mind! And I hope for Nokia's sake that it's a hit. I personally don't think it will be, if it's just another small punt at a bit of market share it won't work and I think that will be the end of Nokia

Hope this community keep momentum and that once the 18 month and 24 month contracts end the phone doesn't get forgotten!

Thank you for your honesty and candour - N900 was not the right device for you and it is regrettable that it's cost you so much to find this out. Some here will doubtless attack you for not doing your research, but should one really have to in this day and age?

Despite the claims of others here that N900 is a 'Developer's Device' or 'it's not a phone it's a tablet/pocket pc/whatever, I believe Nokia could've done better when marketing this device.

But then again, maybe they wouldn't 've sold any N900's if they'd been so honest..!

Good luck with the iPhone - although I'm going to keep my N900 for the foreseeable future.

I agree the N900 is an awesum device, but it is not finished.
Its not good enough to be considered a computer
and its barely good enough to be called a mobile phone
Picture messaging should be built into the operating system and we should not have to install some app to bodge it.

In a year or so it maybe worth it, lets see what Nokia provide with their next software update (if they ever do) and it would be awesum if meego was released on it, but I somehow doubt it, it seems like Nokia built up loads of hype about thie "super phone that was also a computer" and then just gave up on it.
It has the potential to be brilliant, but at the moment its dissapointing
