I have searched the forum but I can't find this info:

Is it possible to get Mplayer to trigger instead of the built in player when clicking on a link on a web page?
Quite a few times Mplayer can play things that the built in player can't but it is quite akward to cut/paste links in Mplayer.

/D

Yes, it is possible (but not so comfortable).
Look at this post:

That works only for opera right? Is there a way to default any program for any other type of file system wide?

Eg. for windows, we can set .wav files to be used by mediaplayer classic.... and mp3 by winamp . That sort of thing... so when we click on a wav, the assigned player plays it.

Theoretically it should be possible to do that... but also not very comfortable!
The association between filetype and application is defined with .desktop files in the following path.
/usr/share/applications/hildon/
Look for example at the "mp_ui.desktop". There you will find
the association between the build in media player and the MimeTypes of
the media files. If you edit some of the files you will need to run "update-desktop-database".

I would not recommend to edit these files if you don't know what you are doing!!! And afaik mplayer can't handle a direkt open of files from the filebrowser.
