Hi, I thought that it would be nice if I could use N900 as a video surveillance system. Like watching my car at night and start recording when something moves close to it.

You could probably get 'motion' up and running with a little messing around - I just compiled it in scratchbox with no errors so I'm kind of guessing it'll work.

(Turns out it does work)

I made a very quick package attached below - it installs and runs on the N900 - it is NOT optified (not very big though) I would suggest you have a read of the documentation on the website I linked above - it's pretty easy to set up. It does work for me, though I've only tested with the front camera at the moment.

Be aware that you'll have to modify your image snapshot paths in the config file to save to your MyDocs directory or wherever.

Important: I had to do mkdir /var/run/motion, but check the run time options "-p" in particular.

I don't really have a need for this since I have dedicated IP cameras, though I guess if someone has an itch they could do a better job than I just did a few minutes ago : )

The box around my fingers was put there by motion itself - it shows where it detected my hand movement.

When everything is in the right place and installed, you can invoke it by running: motion -c ~/motion.conf -n (just an example)

This is a good start. I was not able to install it, but I'm not very good with these, so I'm sure it works. I just did some kind of mistake somewhere.

Anyway, easy GUI would be nice, if someone is interested of creating one It could have 3 buttons, Button1 start surveillance, button2 configure area what to watch and button3 for options, like how long to record, what quality (if that is possible), where to store etc..

just remember to keep the N900 plugged to a running charger; recording and analyzing video all night long will probably drain the battery dry way before the Sun starts getting close to the eastern horizon....
