I don't think we're getting away from these blobs all that quickly.. however IIRC they are trying to make these blobs under a "redistributable" policy. That way.. regardless of paid employees at Nokia porting for N900 or not.. the MeeGo distribution will be legally able to distribute those drivers.

(N900 specific, not talking future MeeGo..)

I think their goal is to minimize the number of binary blobs (as much as manufacturers will allow) for Meego. So if things go as planned, the only binary blobs are the hardware drivers that manufacturers don't want opened (though why Nokia even had closed software parts to begin with.. )

Because there is no competitive, open alternative

There is no open competitive alternative to PowerVR.

There is no 100% open phone stack (there is always a binary blob). And all firmware is closed source. For legal reasons for radios.

That's the impression I got, too, but I suspect they'll also dump some kind of ovi junk and other "value add" crap in there, too. It's more of a matter of whether that all starts to become binary cruft that you can't remove or, worse, can't remove without breaking things like they did in Maemo.

And then there's the concern that even if there are very minimal binary blobs, the blobs that ARE there might become a prison for all the open portions in the same way that Tivo binary blobs and signature-based lock-downs can imprison the open-source on the hardware and make it as good as closed. Does MeeGo have any charter or rules preventing that, as a possible instance?

On Linux side I made a phonecall with audio with no closed source involved. Modem side is closed yes, but that's no real problem for the Linux side..

Ah, the OpenMoko people have done it. Impessive!

With less than half a dozen of developers, in less than nine months of unpaid, spare-time work.
Now data
