Open your web browser. Put file:///<path> in the location bar (eg file:///home/user/MyDocs/.documents/Media for the sake of arguement). Tap the + icon on the location bar, or long tap the page and select "Add address", and tap "Add shortcut to desktop". You don't get thumbnails, but you do get quick access to the files in the folder via the browser.

Simples.
