I'm looking into buying a N800 to replace my laptop. I only use the laptop to take notes, surf the web, check email and code (I compile on my main system, if it is needed. Most code is web-based and I just upload to test). Obviously, I will need to get a bluetooth keyboard...

Here begins my questions:
1) Does it VPN? Does it VPN well (will I be able to connect to my server to compile code, or upload it through FTP on the remote machine, or even test it?)

2) How well does video playback perform? And will I be able to playback through VPN (we have a T3 on the machine I will be VPN'ing to) or anything fancy like that, or will I have to set up a private site to stream videos to myself?

3) How good is the writing program on it? Will I be able to realistically take notes on it?

4) How would I go about setting up the VPN properly? Ideally, I would want it to run similarly to Remote Desktop or RealVNC...

Any tips for a noob are welcome too. :P

1) VPN clients are on a per-VPN basis. If you tell us what manner of VPN you use, I can be more specific. If you're setting up a VPN from scratch, Hamachi is free and easy to configure.

2) Video playback is simply excellent. You will want to set up a UPnP server to stream videos, such as TVersity: they tend to be trivial to install and play nicely with VPNs as it is.

3) HWR is iffy. The thumb keyboard is quite reasonable for short periods of time.

4) I don't think I understand the question being asked here.
