north america is weird.

they are the only country that prefers xbox over playstation or nintendo even though HUGE quality difference.

they go for cheap, low quality american hardware.

Actions around the sudden decision by HP to kill tablets and smartphones support one of my key points in the speculation here. To wit:

Hewlett Packard has abruptly announced that it's getting out of the smartphone and tablet game, a little over a month after it launched its TouchPad tablet and around two years after it ponied up almost $2 billion to buy Palm for its mobile "WebOS" software. Speculation about such a decision has been brewing in recent months, though HP had staunchly denied any indications that it was considering shuttering any of its consumer lines.
So, to bulletize:
  • Rumors had circulated that HP would be shutting down some consumer product ops
  • HP denied it all
  • Today HP admitted the rumors were correct.

Sound familiar to anyone here?

Still think corporate heads always mean it when they deny an alleged business decision?

One could speculate that the skeleton staff kept on for Harmattan is just that, and will disolve around the same time the pull the pin on Maemo @ end 2012

....or

Meego still is their backup peice, and development, based on Swipe UI is going ahead a: for markets where they won't get WP penetration or b: in case of the big Flop (not the Canadian one, but the WP handset fail one), they still have a "differentiating" OS to run with in the smartphone sector.....

WebOS is Qt based, right?

It would be a shame to simply throw it away...

One reason why Intel could be a possible buyer for webos, given that, with a rewrite for x86, it would give them a ready made UI layer for an Intel meego device
