Hello everyone,

Im really new at Maemo 5 and I'm willing to make some little
improvements on Xournal application (which I use so much).

However, I have not find anywhere like a listing of all the possibilities to have code compiled to work on Maemo 5. I noticied that the most common ways are using Maemo 5 SDK (scratchbox) inside or not of a virtual machine and by using the N900 itself to compile the code using SSH (or perharps the own device keyboard!).

I heard somewhere that Meego SDK is capable to simulate Freemantle code, but I'm not sure if it can be used to compile code to run on Maemo 5.

Since this will be my first try developing for something beside x86,
what option you guys recommend to me?

My linux box is Ubuntu 11.04 x64.

I'd recommend using the Maemo 5 SDK (scratchbox), I think it's the easiest and best option for Maemo 5 development. The GUI Installer works fine on 64 bit machines too.
