Do you have a 770 or 800? I've just started encoding all my movies and i think optimum for 800 is 400x240 played back with mplayer.
MediaConverter works great not sure what codec or compression levels they use but it looks great. you can get it here https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=26 For MediaConverter i use N800 high quality (400x240) with video bitrate 576 and audio bitrate 96.
If i use auto gordian knot i encode at 400x240 xvid since divx errors out for some reason. Looks great but my 80% quality level gives file size twice the size that media converter gives. I probably could approximate mediaconverter file sizes but why bother its much quicker to encode using mediaconverter anyways.... so i use autogordianknot to encode to 720x480 for archival and then media converter to downsample for nokia.
I'm still trying to figure out the best way to handle very wide screen formats... hopefully media converter will add a way to adjust level of crop to balance between cropping the whole thing to fit or leaving huge black bars. Would be nice to sacrifice only half of the horizontal crop and have half size black bars on top and bottom.

What type of file will play correctly though? What extension? .avi, mpeg4?
