It's subsidized, but also with much better hardware. Phones with hardware similar to Jolla's are around 200 € today.

With stuff from Google you will always pay one way or the other and make your contacts pay as well by letting your free software process your contact's data as well.
Ok I'd buy the Nexus
1) Nexus 5 for 299 Euro
If I could add:
2) Sailfish OS license for 99 Euro with full support for Nexus 5 (amongst other devices)
3) Optional Android support with easy on/off root like dev mode on Sailfish for another 15 - 25 Euro
but there is no such option is there?
