As a "vim" user myself, I have to admit that I've really never used a gui-based app for writing either notes or longer works. I don't know how much interest there would be today in an alternative GUI editor...

I have always thought pluma/gedit would e nice to get on N900.

I never liked osso-notes to bother with it, there are a few other GUI options like leafpad etc

Leafpad is very basic and that is exactly what I like about it for typing code but it does not fulfill any of the OP's requirements.

Notes is an OSSO app and should have the sources available. Have they been backed up, though?

osso-notes is in non-free/misc section of the repository. So likely, it means that it never had its source available or under freely licence.

Thank you. Best wishes.
