I think I figured out how to enlarge the icons on the desktop......is there a way to enlarge the text under each one ?

if you're using KDE or Gnome (posting here implies running linux) then you just tweak the standard desktop settings - the whole UI is scalable.

if you're running windows, you get what you deserve :-)
