/.../ Besides that, it's fun to use VLC on my PC to stream video/audio to my NIT when I'm not home or can't be on my PC for extended periods of time!

VLC has been ported to the NIT - with Hildon interface and all - but it does not reach anywhere near the performance of mplayer. :\
