Hi Everyone,

Quick intro: I grew up around Nokia's.

I've had:
-N96
-N78 (x2)
-N75
-6682
-Can't remember the really old ones

I just got my N900 in the mail!!!

What should I do first!?

My screen protector is still in the mail, and probably won't get here for another week. Is it safe to take off the screen cover film? Is it possible to clean the screen really well when the protector comes, without damaging anything?

I guess I should download the firmware updates first What else should I do?!

Hey!!
Congratulations for getting the N900, you'll LOVE it!
Sure you can remove the protector film. If you want my advice (people will be bashing on me for this), don't use the stylus until you get the actual screen protector! Some people experienced very small scratches because of the stylus (or keeping N900 in your pocket, with keys and coins). You can use it with your finger, no problem!!! Don't worry about it. The screen is also easy to clean.
First, yeah, connect to the internet and install the firmware updates over the air. Very easy to do.
I'm very careful with my device, so I can suggest you a couple applications that are REALLY safe, I have never experienced problems with my device. Absolutely never, not a single reboot!
First, you should install Pidgin, which is in maemo-extras now I think. You can also download the dataplan monitor which is very useful. The desktop command application is also very nice if you want to monitor battery % and other stuff, but if you want to check battery % you can also go in X Terminal and write: lshal | grep batt
If I may also suggest you don't download widgets that always refresh, since they drain battery fast. Meteo widgets are ok (OMWeather), but do not install facebook widget. Anyway, it isn't useful.
If you have other questions, feel free to ask, I'll watch this thread if I can help!
Have fun

Awesome thank you for the response!

Ok no stylus until the screen protector gets here

Yup, I will have a dedicated pocket just for this phone. The only other object that might be in that same pocket is a soft leather wallet. Keys have scratched my n96 screen before.

Can I download all these from my phone? I will probably be heading to work soon ( ) so I'm wondering if I'll be able to download them while away from the computer.

I've heard widgets can really drain the battery. I'm obsessed with 'monitoring' apps. I'm sure I will get the battery and others too if possible.

Please charge phone before fw update.
And before commenting anything about battery usage time remember that it might take 3-5 charging cycles before it goes to optimal level.

Congratulations

Just peel of the film and use it like you normally would, you get the tissues and wipes with the protector so clean it.

The screen is not that prone to scratches unless you got lots of keys and coins in your pocket...

Then open you browser in the phone, go to store.ovi.com and install Angry Birds, will keep you busy for a while

Activate the maemo repository in the download catalogs in the phone.
Lots of apps there made by this excellent community.

Try installing Tversity on your computer, voila now you can stream all you music and tv series and films over your Wlan without any further setting needed in the phone (except for wlan password and a wireless router at home)

You will find the media server icon in the bottom left corner in the mediaplayer of the phone.

Works nice when you want to be in the bedroom and watch a movie, or you could always connect it to you bedroom tv with the cable that was included in the box and use it as a wireless mediacenter for you tv.

After that install Droid fonts to make the text look nice your new phone.

After that find a nice new theme and maybe install firefox and weave addon to sync all your firefox bookmarks on the computer(including passwords) so you have em on you phone, pretty neat.

Well thatīs for a start

Enjoy!

*EDIT ooh here are lots of great wallpapers to download.

Purchase a separate GPS navigation device, download the Maemo SDK Virtual Machine, purchase some more chargers/batteries (because it's still an energy hog even after 2mo of usage), install 3rd party apps to bring the device on par with other smartphone features (MMS,etc), enjoy full flash in stock web browser

I'm obsessed at monitoring too lol, I paid my N900 about 850$ so I always ensure everything goes well

If you want to monitor apps, open X Terminal and write: Top
This command shows every running processes and tells you if something is going wrong.
You may be a little confused about how to download apps, but here is a quick course:
There are 3 repositories that you can use. Maemo extras, Extras-testing and extra-devels. NEVER enable extra-devels if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Each new app go by a security check process and goes in extras-devel first. Many of these apps are not optified and can ''brick'' you N900 (you can always flash it, but that's long and you don't want this).
You can enable maemo extras, all apps in there are safe to use! You'll see many more to come.
Concerning Extras-testing, some apps there can also be buggy and dangerous so inform yourself about them before installing. The apps I talked to you in the other post are safe.

Go on this link to learn more about the repositories: http://wiki.maemo.org/Repository
Everything is well explained there, go at the bottom of the page.

If you're looking for a case, I suggest the PDAir case. Just check on google, they're very well made.

probably The best thing to do after you get your phone is install some apps. the extra protocols for aim msn would be good. hermes is a good app to pull information odf your contacts off of facebook or twitter. install koffice for viewing documents. and of course personalize your panoramic desktop.

a bunch of other apps are good to but im not quite sure what you use your phone mostly for.

have fun with your new N900
