we should be able to prot this right? it says the first build will be for Cortex A devices. It also sounds like it will support phones.

After further reading, it seems they aim to unify the efforts of the many vendors of mobile Linux solutions: the idea is to avoid them having to re-invent the wheel for the features they integrate in their devices.
So, let's say that vendor A needs to invest R&D to create an algorithm to improve 3G data transmission, vendor B notices that and does the same in their own way.
What Linaro intends to do is to develop that kind of stuff, and offer them to anyone that wants it. That should also help normalize distributions between platforms (MeeGo being the current one closes to "pure" Linux, with Android and other platforms trailing behind).

Basically it sounds like they will work to make the kernel-chip level interactions easier across ARM chips. If I get this right it seems things like DJ Steves Android port will become trivial. Good news for us.
