I was trying to view a 500 page ebook in the pdf viewer, and after about 10 minutes of waiting for it to load I gave up. Is there a program out there to convert pdf to an ebook format fbreader uses? I prefer something that will work on os x, but linux or windows is fine too.

Hello soleblaze, I would advise to check out the web site http://www.mobileread.com. They have a forum (http://www.mobileread.com/forums) and a wiki (http://www.mobileread.com/wiki/Main_Page and http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_conversion) that detail the workflow and tools that you need.

There are some fans over there of using the N770/N800 as a mobile reading device. And some folks have scanned books in that were not available in any e-book format just so that they could read it on their Nokia device. They detail the workflows and tool chains.

You may find this article in Unix Review informative on the subject of extracting text from PDFs.
