Are there any wireless options (charging, data transfer, etc) so I can ditch the cable? Can I connect to my PC via wireless network, bluetooth, or other in order to transfer files? I believe the Palm Pre has a wireless charging option and I recall seeing commercials for wireless charging other phones and devices as well. Is there anything like that available for the N900? I'd prefer not wearing out the micro USB port each time I want to transfer files or charge it (which is quite often) if I can avoid it.

Bluetooth works fine for data transfers. You can use a whole raft of options. You could also take the MicroSD out of the back but suspect that would simply shift the issue. For charging the other option is to have a desk charger for the battery.
I have the lead in and out of my handset several times a day and was one of the first wave in the UK to get it. So far no issues with the socket.

There's no wireless charging, but you can certainly transfer files wirelessly.

There are wireless charging options, but nothing for the n900 yet that fits directly into the backplate without using the USB port - If you can live with having a plastic gadget thing plugged (snugly) into the usb port permanently, something like Pure Energy's Wildcharge system will help. The adaptor that plugs into the phone looks like this:

The big arm that attaches to the back of the phone is removable while leaving the small usb tip in place, so as long as you can put up with the tip being there permanently you can remove the arm itself when not charging, without risking damaging the USB port.

The adaptor and arm then hook up to the charging pad itself by simply placing the phone with adaptor+arm attached onto the pad...

Pure Energy do make skins for iPods/iPhones and various Blackberries so that they can charge on the pad without needing an adaptor and arm connected, cross your fingers they might be able to come up with a skin/backplate for an N900 at some point.

That sounds like a great idea, especially with so many users having problem with the usb port wiggling and falling off. An ssh server to transfer everyday files would work fine .. hmm... has anyone bought one of these sticky thingies?

The tip design doesn't look like it would fit too well on the N900 - on one side of the USB socket you've got the camera (so the back isn't level there) and on the other side you've got the sliding screen.

I went ahead and tried transferring files via bluetooth and it was woefully slow. Is there anyway I can transfer files via wifi home network?

FTP/SCP, setup a server for either one of them on either the phone or your pc and a client on the other, and transfer whatever you need between them.

Is it necessary to setup an FTP server? I can share files between PCs on my home wireless network. Being that the N900 in many ways is much like a PC but with phone capabilities, is it possible to connect it to the network?
