I have searched the various sites and Google but cannot figure out why when I create an ad-hoc network on Ubuntu that simply merges my wired to the wireless card in ad-hoc mode.

My iPhone seems the network immediately, connects, gets an address via DHCP.

My Vista laptop also does the same.

Yet, my N810 doesn't even show the SSID in Wireless Connections, as if it doesn't even see it.

I realize I could probably connect via command line, but I would be amazed if you can't connect to Ad-Hoc via Network Manager.

I just put a WEP key on it, so that everyone does suck free Internet off of it and I noticed something.

Now that I put the WEP key on, now the N810 cares to show the network.

Does it hide no-key ad-hocs thinking most likely they are bad and some sort of security threat?

I create an ad-hoc network from my ubuntu laptop often because I don't have a wireless router at the moment.
I don't use any security on the ad-hoc network, I live out in the middle of the woods, so no one around to steal my internet.
my n810 sees it right away and connects. haven't had any problems with it.

although as a side note a friends laptop that runs vista can almost never connect to the ad-hoc network even though it can see it. good ol' vista.
