so i had my N900 in my pocket and bumped into a table. the corner of the table must have hit the screen because when i looked at my phone next i saw that the screen black with a crack in the lower left corner.

the phone still works, i used the AV cables to plug it into my TV and was able to check my messages and even make a call.
it does seem to be running a little slow....

i am going to replace the screen, but i am not exactly sure what i need. some items on ebay say 'digitizer' and others say LCD.

heres one i may buy
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....#ht_2528wt_752

is that all i need or will i need to also get a digitizer?

http://www.ehow.com/about_5408831_to...igitizer_.html

A digitizer is needed to tell your device where you have touched. So if your touch screen works, you don't need it and you just need the 3.5" LCD.

I suggest you connect your phone to your tv. Download or launch 'Healthcheck' (available from extras-testing). In the app go to 'Tools', 'Accuracy Test' and check that all parts of the touch screen work. If they all do work you don't need a digitizer. If some parts don't work then you need it.

Also some companies sell the LCD and digitizer already assembled. Something to keep in mind for easiness (It's easier to buy them both pre-assembled then messing about with your existing one yourself..).

You may very well need a digitizer as well. When I dropped my N900 in a toolbox and cracked the display, the digitizer went as well. It didn't appear to have any damage, but it wouldn't work at all - period.

Also, pay attention to the images and description if you're going to ebay an LCD. You want the MP2.0 version if at all possible. I know for fact of one distributor that carries the proper screens AND digitizers, and offers shipping options such as fedex 2-day. You won't find that with ebay, where most of them are shipped via EMS or worse from Hong Kong. In an effort to avoid being accused of advertisement, if you'd like the link for the distributor that I swear by, send me a message.

The replacement process is fairly straightforward, I've done it twice. If you run into any issues let me know.

In this context I don't see how someone could accuse you of advertising unless you have a principal interest in the company you link to.

I for one would love to see the link so that it can be referred to here in the future.

I would think your experience is very welcome in this case.

With that said, if you still don't feel comfortable posting it PM the sites addy to me and I will post it in this thread for duty and humanity.

BTW, is the digitizer easy to separate from the display or is it possible to damage it during disassembly?

http://mobile-phone-lcd.com, the digitizer is seperate from the display itself. it is highly possible to damage the flex cables during disassembly, which I found out first hand. just be careful and use a prying tool, taping down the flex cable on the LCD when reassembling is helpful in not bending or tearing the cable. one other thing to note is that you may want to run the shower on super hot for several minutes until your bathroom steams up with the door shut. let the steam settle and it'll pull the dust down to the floor, which will help you not get dust or debris between the digitizer and the display when reassembling. Cheers!

Fixing it is definitely an option but fyi, I broke my screen over the summer, sent it into Nokia and for some reason, they replaced it for free..plus sent me a $10 visa gift card?

Who knows if you'll luck out, but worth sharing my good luck Nevertheless, good luck fixing it if you go that route!
