Need help with this problem. when I use the extended battery on this phone, it shuts off whenever I open to slider. It doesn't happen at all with the Nokia battery so I know it's not a hardware problem with the n900.

That is horrible I am considering this battery but not if people are having this issue.

i had this problem with a stock battery too, just had to bend the contacts on the battery in a tad, it wasnt making good contact and when the shake of the slider opening would cut it off

The contact pins are springs, bend them inwards to they squeeze the contact slices in the phone - problem solved.

just confirming that you should bend the springs, when you open the keyboard you shock the battery and this can cause the pins to loose connection just for .1 sec and that is enough for the phone to die.

I'm not having this issue.

Rule of thumb: It's too soon to get hysterical when a problem is reported once or a few times.

I have been puzzling over this the past couple of days as well,
thanks for your insight as it will save some grief
I originally thought the problem was destined to be inside,
as each time I slid the keyboard out the machine went hard off,
but it is clearly just the newness of the sliding mechanism (new unit)
which aggressively -SNAPs- into the open position.

(mine is stock battery as well)

Confirmed as Contact Issue

BL-5J Battery contacts close-up comparing poor contacts
with 'new' contacts - note the size of the gap here:
the contacts are simple spring-clamps designed to grip
the battery contact bar.

Both batteries say Nokia but either one of them is fake (possible)
or it is simply too worn out (both bought new less than two months old)
and , No - I have only swapped them three or four times at most.

It appears the 'poor' contacts on the battery
may not be the same alloy and I will probably need to revisit them
occasionally.

The quick fix ? use a push-pin (thumbtack, needle, whatever)
to bend the contacts a little bit closer together.
If I were not so lazy I would pull it apart an solder on new contacts,
but I am so...
