I know its been raised elsewhere but does anyone out there have any idea when this shocking state of affairs is going to get sorted. Its the main reason I bought this device, I took the gamble Sykpe would have video! I lost.

Can anyone, anywhere give me some good news?????????

stewwalton: The problem has been discussed on a few threads in this forum. You can do a search to get more details on them.

There is a already a bugfix request on this issue at https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1833 . You can put your vote on the issue (you need to register yourself first, I really recommend all N800 owners to have an account there) so the development team can know how serious the problem is (and how many thankful individuals there would be if the issue is fixed).

I brought my N800 for the video chat to pc featureand the for the internet usage, somewhat for sketching on the go, not necessarily for the N800 to N800 video chat, because of knowing the cheap friends I have would not go out and buy the device.

Now when I found out the feature was taken out, I was kind of frustrated with the purchase, felt like I was suckered into buying this device.

Now how is a feature offered, knowing most purchase will be made based on it, and then taken out? (even if in beta)

Uh, no. Most purchases were NOT based on it, which is why it wasn't a part of the firmware originally and why it was in beta. Also, when you signed up for it, they specifically tell you that it's a beta and that it can and will end eventually.

The good news is that this feature is supposed to be making a comeback in RTCOMM. When? No idea, just the same Nokia "soon".

Video chat between N800 users is in currently (and in somewhat better form in the RTCOMM beta). The PC program for chatting with N800 users was *very* flaky and as someone that used it a lot, I'm kind of glad it's not online anymore. (I'd rather not have alpha quality software for this.) Since Nokia is using open standards and open source software, there's no real reason why it shouldn't work with Jabber clients that support video as well. Also, no reason why someone couldn't code one up specifically for chatting to N800 users.
