Maemo Mapper can use Google Maps. It's a bit of a "grey" area, but if you go into the config for map repositories you should see a "download" button. If you press it, it will add repositories for Google Maps and Virtual Earth.

Ok. You are right.
But what I mean is porting Google Mobile Maps java application to Nokia 800/700. There is already one known porting of GMM to Linux platform for Access Linux.
MM is ok, but GMM offer more features and works closely with POI databases and Google Maps API applications, I develop.
John did a really fantastic job with his Maemo Mapper, replacing Ajax functionality by asynchronous pointing device and +/- zooming buttons.
But still GMM with its markers management code (Javascript) gives more freedom than POI database layer in MM.
Anyway one can still open Google Maps in web browsr's window.

The issue itself It's the POI database....meaning if maemo mapper would 'borrow' google maps pois then it will put it over the hill. And that's what we need..a poi wide database

Ok. What is called POI in navigaton is a marker in Google Maps.
I am writing Googler Maps API applications in javascript + MySQL + PHP.
If you can write some code in Python I will try to port some applications to MM.
