Hi,

I've just this evening upgraded my Nokia 770 to OS2007HE, and things are generally nice and shiny, but I'm having one or two problems - specifically with MPlayer and with UKMP (I don't know if these are related or not, so have posted about UKMP in a seperate thread).

I initially installed mplayer from the OS2007 repositories, and so an n800 version was installed. I ran this from the applications menu, but when I clicked a video and selected play, nothing happened. So, I removed this version of mplayer, and grabbed the .deb for the latest 770 mplayer. However, this gave me two further problems: a) there was no mplayer entry added to the application menu, and b) running mplayer from a terminal results in a segfault!

What's the secret to getting mplayer to work on OS2007HE on a 770?

Thanks,

James Frost

*bump!*

Same problem here. 770 with OS2007HE. Mplayer finds .avi files on my memory card (which I converted using the Java tool at medium quality), but does nothing when I select one and click Play (or Report)...

I suspect the problem is in the mp3 decoding. There should be some instructions on how to solve this in the forums. Try opening mplayer in xterm and have a look at what it says.

N800 version of MPlayer will not work on 770. Even installing OS2007 on Nokia 770 will not magically add support for missing instructions to its CPU. I believe I have seen some reports about successfully using the latest 770 version of MPlayer with OS2007HE on Nokia 770, that's what you should try (I don't know what problems did the original poster have, not getting even a menu entry is very strange, probably his package manager got broken for some reason and screwed up everything).

What are the ideas about fixing this problem?

That makes sense, but I can't seem to find any specific instructions for getting MPlayer to work with OS2007HE on 770. Anyone?

What would you think about an unified mplayer package with both armv5te and armv6 optimized builds of mplayer binary bundled (named something like 'mplayer-armv5te' and 'mplayer-armv6')? And also a simple wrapper script 'mplayer' which would check /proc/cpuinfo and run either of these? A drawback would be a doubled package size.

I'd vote for no. If you can't have same binary and check for cpu at runtime directly in mplayer then I'd keep one package per device. Maybe you can split package to two (mplayer-770, mplayer-800 or something like that) so you are not offered n800 version in application manager when doing package upgrade in 2007HE. Also maybe section 'installation' at http://mplayer.garage.maemo.org/ could mention n770 vs n800 choice.
