Would it be possible to create an applet that would automatically bring the screen brightness up to a user-defined level when it detects that the tablet is plugged into an AC power source?

Conversely, when a disconnection from AC is detected, it falls back to another user-defined level.

Would acMonitor fit your needs? (scroll down to the bottom 1/3 of the page) "A quick one-off application to provide the Nokia N800 with separate brightness level and screen blank settings depending on whether or not it is connected to AC power or running off battery"

Nope. I'm getting an error message informing me of missing packages libdbus-1-2
