My 770 has recently started to show 2 dark spots on the display. I'm not certain if this is from excess pressure put on the display or if it was placed next to a magnet or if those 2 things could even cause a constant dark spot. Does anyone know more about the display hardware and what could cause these symptoms and if it's fixable?

That's normal for LCD screens. It's called dead pixels. Some exist from the start (and warranties exclude a certain amount of dead pixels for replacement). After a while, more dead-pixels can develop, but there isn't anything oen can do about it. Pressing hard can definitely put more stress on the LCD and trigger failures earlier rather than later. I don't think magnets have anything to do with it.

By spots do you mean "pixels" or "areas that are a bit darker than the rest of the screen"? If the answer is pixels, then they're probably dead pixels as m_stolle said. If they're areas, then its probably been there all along and they're caused by the unequal distribution of light from the LEDs that make up the backlight (I assume the n770 uses a LED backlight, never seen a good pic of a disassembled one). In a review for the n770, there was mention of dark spots, which looked like they were caused by the backlight. Theres not much you can do about it, unless you take it apart and add more LEDs. Other devices have the same problem, my PSP has darker areas along the bottom of the screen where the LEDs are, usually only visibly on solid, light colored backgrounds, even then its not a problem.

And magnets do nothing to LCDs, I've set magnets right on the screen of my PSP and Game Boys. Its still not a great idea, as they could possibly screw something else up.

My 770 wasn't like that for the first 6 months of owning the tablet, it just happened within the past week or two.

I have a similar spot on mine that I only noticed about 3 months after owning it. I can't see it when looking directly at the screen so it's never bothered me. I only notice the spot when I look at it from an angle and the screen is all white. Clearly it's not dead pixels, I doubt you'd be even able to see a dead pixel on a screen this size with the number of pixels that make up this screen.

I'm not sure what the dark spot is and I doubt its from the using the touch screen since my dark spot is in a place on the screen that I rarely touch and over a year later hasn't gotten any worst.

It is still visible straight on but it is does get significantly darker as I tilt the screen as you pointed out. Also it is more visible on white websites like maemo.org which is what I used in the picture hoping the poor quality cell phone camera would pick it up.

The 2 spots developed when I started carrying the 770 around without the hard cover in place. I guess for now I'll assume the dark spots are attributed to vskin3's explanation of unequal distribution of light from the LEDs. I hope to come across more information on how to fix this problem. (if it's repairable)

That actually looks like a pressure spot, light distribution spots are usually just on one edge and always there. I don't know how pressure would increase on the screen, carrying it in your pocket without the hard cover would probably add pressure, but only while its in your pocket.

Yes I was carrying it in my pocket without a cover for a brief period when that happened. Is there any way to fix those spots once that has happened or does the screen need to be replaced? I'm not very familiar with the technology that makes displays work.
