Hi all,
I've been interested in getting the N800 for a while now. I currently have a Blackberry 8100 Pearl with T-Mobile in the US. I've tried searching for anyone trying that setup but not much success. Most say its not supported because Blackberry disables DUN. I think it was earlier this year, there was an update for the Pearl that enabled DUN or at least enabled people to use a TomTom GPS with the Pearl and receive data. I was able to update and get my TT910 working with it. I would think if TomTom's proprietary interface can communicate with the Pearl then the N800 should also. Can anyone try it? I'm not sure if the newest update still allows it. Check out www.blackberryforums.com for the latest update. Thanks...

Well, I used my pearl as DUN for the N800 once, when I first got the N800 it found the pearl, connected, paired and worked. The only change I had to make was changing the internet2.voicestream.com apn name to wap.voicestream.com (on t-mobile of course...) because the pearl cant access internet2 (at least mine cant) and it worked great, but only ONCE. when I disconnected that connection I never managed to connect to the pearl again. I think I might have gotten it to work for a brief period a second time by hard booting both devices (battery out) but I know it didnt stay connected for long, and when the Pearl (mine anyway) takes about 8 minutes to "reboot" this wasnt a good solution for me. So I gave up and bought a Nokia 6133 for $30.00 US and I use that when I need a cell connection to the internet.

Yes, I have this setup. Latest firmware from TMobile doesn't support DUN. However I have installed newer firmware from Rogers (Canada) which seems to have made it to work. There are instructions on where to find this and how to install it on BB forum (http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com). There is even newer firmware then this now, but I haven't tried it. I'm waiting for version that supports A2DP (it's coming).

The first thing I did was tether it to my laptop. I got 155/42 kbps. Once that was working I proceeded with N800. It's really cool to be able to drive around and have Maemo Mapper download maps automatically.

I'll get around and write full instructions on this in the next couple of days.

Thats interesting, because I was on the latest firmware from T-Mo and the tethering worked great on everything BUT the N800. well anything that ran the BB Desktop Manager anyway. But like I said, I only got it to tether on the N800 once. I am going to install the Rogers firmware now (got nothing to loose..) and try it again. see what happens. The one question I have is, do you have to tether to a laptop first or can you go straight to the N800 (I didnt bring my laptop with me today, thats why I got the N800 so I could leave it at home <grin>)

I'd be really interested to hear about how you got this working. Maybe it's because I have a 770, not an 800, but I upgraded my Pearl's firmware to the newest available from Rogers and I still can't get them to pair. Thanks!

I have been seeking answers as all of you have. From what I read the Blackberry Pearl 8100 is locked down. There appears to be attempts to make it work, but I am yet to see full success. I use the IT 770. I have found out, through Cingular rep. that I can take my sim card out of the 8100 and move it to my original phone (Sony Ericsson w600i). All "wap.cingular.com" services would be available and no extra charge. I have the BB Ent plan. The rep said that the unlimited data covers both BB and WAP internet connections. I plan on keeping my old phone that tethered fine to the 770, nearby. This way if the BB does not give me what I need, I can pop out the sim and use my tethered 770. It isn't perfect, but it will work. I need my BB for work mostly. So those days I am stuck in the airport and want to tether, I can do the above and be online with my 770.

Hi all,

Well I took the plunge and bought the N800 from amazon.com and with 2 day shipping. It should arrive early next week. My only phone is the Pearl 8100 so I will be working on pairing it the second I open it. From what I remember when I paired it to the TomTom was that it took a couple tries to successfully pair it for data. I think I tried about 5 times and then updated 1 more time completely. I didn't restore or backup that time. It didn't work at first so I rebooted the phone and it worked. I couldn't believe it but it definitely updated the traffic and established the connection. I haven't updated firmware or anything since then.

The Blackberry shows

v4.2.1.94 (Platform 2.3.0.77)

The newest at T-Mobile is 4.2.0.64 and the newest at blackberryforums.com is 4.2.1.164

I think I'm going to wait for the N800 to arrive and try it with the current version. I may upgrade if it goes smoothly. Later....

IT WORKS!!
I got my Blackberry Pearl to work everytime with the N800.
Well it is with 4.2.1.66 version. Somehow that version enables the connection. I must have upgraded to the next version and since the pairing was already eastablished it kept the same profiles open thru each device. When I paired the N800, it didn't work at first. I upgraded to the latest version and it still didn't work. I downgraded to 4.2.1.66 and it paired and on the first try gave a different error than I got with the other versions. I tried again and it worked. I would think but I'm not sure if I upgrade to the latest and somehow keep the pairing settings it should work.

Make sure you downgrade by uninstalling them in add/remove programs and then use usb to downgrade.

Link to 4.2.1.66

Good luck!!

I just downgraded to this version and I have also been able to connect/disconnect/re-connect multiple times. This version seems to be the ticket!

Thanks!

Rats, I guess this doesn't apply to the 770. I downgraded my Pearl to the same version and I still get the error about there being no services the device can use. It's strange, because Dial Up Networking is listed as a service in the 8100's Bluetooth configuration, and I've set my Nokia 770 to be a trusted device - I even turned encryption on and off on the phone to see if that would help, but no dice.
