I have my n800, and for my uses, I absolutely adore it. So much so, that my husband now wants to buy an n8x0 for himself. We're running into the problem of knowing which to get. He wants the GPS most of all on it. No one can deny there is a cost difference between getting an 810 over an 800 and external bluetooth receiver.

(This part is especially for people who upgraded.) Is it any more difficult to do the later than it is to set up on the 810? I know from mine that it comes with the software to set up with an external receiver, so really it seems to me the only addition is connecting the receiver. Am I incorrect?

The only other advantageous, we see, to getting the 810 is keyboard. With his fingers, the built in keyboard might be a little better than the touchscreen.

From my understanding the 810 GPS is usable, but nothing compared to a good external Surf III based GPS unit. The other factor you missed is the transflective screen that will make outdoor use much more comfortable.

Ya the N810's GPS is not a good replacement for a full GPS unit only because of how long it takes to get a lock. If it had a quick lock time it would work great. But unfortunately the locking takes a long time is an inconsistent.

I'm a huge proponent to hardware keyboards. If the device doesn't have active touch, the OSK isn't very accurate or efficient : /

I have an n800, and large fingers. I get on ok with the virtual kbd, and got a nice shiny Apple bluetooth kbd for when I need something more.

Oooh, that looks like a very nice option for us N810 owners with extremely slow lock on times! With that kind of standby it would mean being able to put the N810 absolutely anywhere just stick the GPS in the corner of the windscreen or something, then bluetooth it. Very nice.

Having said that...

Hey everyone I'm new here. In Melbourne, Australia, I just bought my N810 last week and am absolutely totally in love with it. The GPS was just a bonus, one I'd be happy to "cash in" if it was working properly but so far it's been a bit hit and miss.

I'm wondering if the default mapping software will receive any updates. Compared to my Garmin 2610 it's very very sparse, however the screen is so much higher resolution that it's an interesting transition.

I'm also dabbling with maemo mapper which will be interesting I think.

I was silly in activating my trial soon after I got it, as I only received my car kit (window and dash holder to match with the one that came with the N810 unit plus charger from Expansys.com.au) . My trial expired this morning so won't be able to test the navigation features properly; e.g. I can't corner much at all and have to pray I don't have to emergency brake for anything

I'm hoping they'll expand on feature set in the future; e.g. on my way in to work this morning it failed to advice me to keep right in a section that required this. My Garmin would have adviced me for sure.
