I know, all the gurus are either SSH into something or using an external keyboard. I still think it is a good idea to be able to program the keyboard, N810 has a keyboard, with some customized functions. e.g., reboot, shutdown, xterm, s-u-d-o g-a-i-n-r-o-o-t, go iTT, go wiki etc. Can it be done, please? Not necessary commands driven, even just repeat some typing will be very handy. Who does not play with xterm/sudo gainroot on a regular base?

Now here is the 2nd request.
I am using the Dpad for almost anything I am doing, be it gps or surfing, even upon bootup (Fanoush's initfs and bootmenu using the Dpad), can we, as users driven (to hell with NooKIA tablet design team), program or reprogram some hardware button on the front, so that one does not have to slide the tablet in and out for every reboot? I do not use the menu button that much, I think I can sacrifice that.........umm, I do use the back space alot, this is going to be tough. How about, upon pressing the menu button, will pop up a screen with choices simulating the Dpad, something like what the power button is doing?

TIA,

bun

It's probably not the answer you want to hear... but I totally know of a way to do exactly what you want. Install and run Penquinbait's KDE as your desktop environment instead of Maemo. I've been using it since Xmas and love it. It is a little slower than Maemo but the gained functionality is more than worth the few seconds.

I've got keyboard shortcuts & hotkeys mapped to launch favorite apps, to control XMMS while it's playing in the background and I'm in another app, I've remapped most all of the the hardware buttons to match my personal usage.

Another alternative is you use xmodmap to remap some of your buttons but I don't think it will allow you to launch apps and such.

PCQ, thank you. That is exactly the answer I want to hear. I have installed KDE v1 on N800 and KDEv2 on N810, I am going to try now and will look up setting recommendations from KDE... Thanks

In that case, you'll want to go to Control Center-> Regional & Accessibility -> check out both Input Actions & Keyboard Shortcuts.

The Keyboard Shortcuts is pretty straight forward, just find the command and assign it to a key (or combination of keys) you can also assign alternatives which I've done so that when I'm using my BT keyboard I can active actions using it instead.

The Input Actions is where I've assigned my "hotkeys". These include things such as controlling XMMS, launching apps, assigning buttons that run shell scripts. There are a few examples included to give you an idea of how to set them up

It's kinda funny, but I actually set up so many shortcuts and mappings that I had to make a list and carry it around with me for a couple of weeks until I had memorized what I had assigned and to where.

Also, if you've got a bunch of little xterm commands that you don't want to officially assign to a key then you can use this nifty little app called Kerez
which provides a nice GUI for storing and running commands. I've then set up a hotkey to launch Kerez.
