I am new here so if this question has been raised before could somebody give me a link.
I am posting this on the three Nokia N800 forums in the hope that somebody can help me get over a silly N800 problem.
So apologies if you have already read this elsewhere
I have been using an N800 for a year now and am generally extremely pleased with it, so much so that I recently won a second Ebay auction for one.But now the first one has an apparently incurable repeat of an error that had happened a few times before.
All my bookmarks have disappeared together with all the history.both have twice reappeared , the history being strange as it then included the record of two days from last September as well as more recent 2009 browsing history!!
This annoyance is coupled with an apparent inability to allow me to save any new replacement bookmarks,
When a web page is open and the drop down menu visible clicking on "web page" then "Add bookmark" brings up an "Add bookmark" dialogue box with the default location My bookmarks already filled in, but then trying to save consistently tells me "Not enough memory in taget location"
yet if I then open File Manager the heading is Nokia N800 and selecting file details produces the following enigmatic information
Storage details
Name Nokia N800
Type Device Memory
Total Size 251.5MB
In Use 248.3MB
Available 3.24MB
two comments are in order
1.I have checked the listed folders under NokiaN800 and deleted all I can but the remaining files are nowhere near that 248.3MB in total so what exactly does that value of used space comprise?
2.In any case surely a large number of simple bookmarks would fit into the alleged 3.24MB "available"
I am new to Linux, but can immediately see that it is nowhere near as "transparent" as DOS/Windoze
I realise that the OS2008 has to live somewhere (presumably in a "flashable" memory chip)
but is it the whole of the 248.3MB and is the elusive My Bookmarks folder there too as it is not listed under the umbrella
Nokia N800 "folder"
the second N880
has a similar usage
Storage details
Name Gutsbl'w tab (as inherited from previous owner yet when I tried to rename it I was informed "renaming not supported"??)
Type Device Memory
Total Size 251.5MB
In Use 230.3MB
Available 21.2MB
read only (why?)
and I can easily add new bookmarks at present
in dear old Windows it is of course a simple matter to find any file on ones hard drive, but not so the Linux equipped Nokia
in file manager there is a "search files"tool
but it appears to only search words for all file type, not file names per se
So searches trying to find either the alleged folder "my bookmarks" or a known bookmark for "google" both produced "no results?
and when I searched for history it did find two files in the documents folder that contained the text "history"
but none of the bookmarks whose titles contain obvious words like google
which is frustrating and just plain silly.
No doubt I am missing something simpe here but if anybody reading this has fathomed out the file and folder structure and can shed any light on my problem I would be hugely obliged

I can't quite follow what you have written here, but I have a couple suggestions. First, on your recently purchased N800, how about flashing the whole thing with a clean, empty OS, and thereby getting rid of the old names.

For finding your way around the file system, install emelfm2.

This discussion of hidden files may help too.

Off-topic: I wish you hadn't gone back and changed The Magus. I liked the original better, and though you thought it the original was "immature," I hate to tell you, but I think it was your best book.

Many MANY thanks Gerald that looks like a most constructive reply
and I'll certainly try it out, and try to understand the Nokia's file structure, Now regarding "The Magus" if you look at my own web site you will see that I am only a "web" author , I have written a section on my late (he died in 2005 sad to say) namesake and fellow Brit.Click his picture at

There is a gallery of scans "things to look at"
including a reply he sent me in 1978 when I wrote to him regarding his revised epic novel. I like both versions.A most fantastic novel.. almost usurps my favoUrite author Nevil Shute.
