hey

today i had to wait for the bus almost 17 minutes...
so i took my N810, loaded MaemoMapper i tried to get a GPS-Fix

behind me were some trees, but overall, there was a beautiful blue sky and therefore perfect conditions for using GPS

but in the entire waiting time, my N810 was not able to get a GPS-Fix...the status bar was at most half full...

in know, the GPS is not the best and it's always said that it could take some time to get a fix....but 17(!) Minutes under perfect conditions?

then i looked up my version, it's 2.2007.50-2
i found out, that there is at least one newer version available

now the question: could a new FW make the GPS better (getting fix faster etc.)

now to the real topic
i am a bit afraid of updating...of course i can make a backup of my settings and data on the N810, but i read that all my installed applications will be lost after flashing
i wonder if the benefits of an update would be worth all the work of installing and configuring my programms after the flashing

is there really no way to back up all applications and there configuration?

Updating right now will not help you. The newer firmware available right now only fixes a boot problem on some tablets. It contains nothing that will help with GPS problems.

The next firmware release, named Diablo, may contain updates that will help you. Wait for that one.

so there is only one newer firmware available whose fixes are negligible for those who do not have any problems (except the damn GPS)?

Did you fire off the inherent Map application first to kickstart the GPS?

plz reform your sentence

the inherent map application (Wayfinder, i guess you mean) is still on the device, but the maps are gone...the pre-owner of the device deleted them and installed maemo mapper

i downloaded proper map material from "open map", sometimes i get a fix but it needs very much time, and those 17 minutes were the most extreme example i experienced

what do you mean exactly by "kickstart the GPS"?

There was a lot of discussion about using the built in app to start the GPS. I don't know if it's still pertinent.
Search the threads.

I accidently deleted my maps and found within the Wayfinder application you can download the maps again. The maps are free, but they do take a while to download.
