Was playing around with the photocast feature and was thinking it would be nice to get webcomics on it, meaning the newest one of each. I knew what was needed to do it but have no PHP skills whatsoever so got a friend to do it for me.

Bottom line:
Add http://home.mtulink.com/~moedegaard/xkcd.php to canola's photo feed and you'll get a feed displaying the newest comic strip from xkcd.com.

Someone on IRC said Canola doesnt do normal RSS, but this is a normal XML feed and it works perfectly so i dunno what thats about.
Ill try to add mroe comics and if other people want to use the script as a basis to add more, go ahead.

<HTML><HEAD>
<META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"></HEAD>
<BODY></BODY></HTML>

ah.. gotcha. thanks.

any plans to expand that a bit? sometimes, the other half of the joke in that comic is in the pop-up comment when you hover your mouse on the graphic (i think it's in the url as the alt= line...)

Never seen such comics. It works for my purposes and since I dont know PHP myself and got this from a friend based on my idea, I'm not the one to do it. I've added more comics for myself, but they are in norwegian. Also, GIF files dont work. There's a way around this that i'm using myself but so far I'm running that off one of my own FTP accounts so I dont want to disclose the method . Might make a how-to on that if people are interested and come across a lot of .gif

xkcd is such a comic. if you load up the page at xkcd.com and move your mouse over the graphic, you'll see the ancillary text.

today's (05/01/2008) says: "I hear this is an option in the latest Ubuntu release."

Ah haven't really paid much attention to that. But since the canola viewer is photo only it's not really anything to do about it.

understood.

I was just pointing out that, sometimes, half of the joke (if not all of the joke) is in the "side comment" on that particular strip. dinosaur comics is another one that often falls into this same category.

Ha! cool

Well canola does support regular (and also not-so regular) rss formats.
