i've always had this idea, but i've never seen it put to work.

now for the N810, couldnt u do this just by using the GPS chip and uploading the coordinates onto a page or something easily?

and for the N800, is it possible to force it to connect to the nearest unsecured network? therefore, as long as its on when u lose it, it can upload its IP address to a page? Its not nearly as good as coordinates, but it is trackable, isnt it?

Not readily trackable by IP address, since it's probably on a class C subnet behind a NAT, but with traceroute, it becomes somewhat traceable.

Absolute Software in Vancouver is the leader in that field. They've been doing it for years.

you could set up your n800 to run a traceroute, record the text, get its IP from one of the many dynamic dns IP echo servers, and send the text as the payload in a ping message to a gateway of your choice.
